I’m a writer, editor, and book designer based in Chicago, where I work full time as senior managing editor at Legacy.com.

My book Geek Wisdom: The Sacred Teachings of Nerd Culture, published in 2011 by Quirk Books, has been featured at Wired, ThinkGeek, the Christian Science Monitor, the Huffington Post and other places, including, for reasons I will not pretend to fully understand, the Restoration Hardware catalog. The followup, Geek Parenting: What Joffrey, Jor-El, Maleficent & the McFlys Teach Us About Raising a Family, coauthored with Valya Dudycz Lupescu, was published in April 2016.

From 2012 through 2015, I served as editor in chief and art director of the Philadelphia Weekly, where I led a team of outstanding young journalists and creatives to achieve top honors from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Pennsylvania Newsmedia Association, including being named best overall non-daily newspaper in the state. In 2013 and 2015 I won the Keystone SPJ’s headline-writing award; in 2014, its page-design award. During the course of my career as a journalist, I’ve reported on scientists, artists and musicians, and once upon a time Warren Zevon complimented my writing chops, which means I can die satisfied.

Previously, as editorial & creative director of Weird Tales from 2006 to 2010, I led the 21st-century revamping and reinvigoration of that classic American fantastic-literature magazine. In 2009, Weird Tales won the prestigious Hugo Award — the magazine’s first such honor in its long history.

As a designer, I’ve crafted more than 200 book and magazine covers for publishers including Prime Books, Tor Books, the Interstitial Arts Foundation, and others. And as an editor and copywriter, I’ve developed everything from pop gift books and corporate websites to offbeat novels and narrative nonfiction.

  1. Stephen you did the cover for Dark Maiden, my novel published in 2008 by Juno Books. Since publication, (my fifth book at that time) I’ve heard from many reader’s comments about your work. Though I realize Jennifer Beagles did the art,you put it all together. Of all the covers for my published novels, yours is the standout Dark Maiden hangs framed and enlarged on my dining room wall for all to see and comment on.
